What is a smart city?

A smart city can be described as how we do business differently and use technology to share information and deliver services to benefit and better serve the community. This includes integrating physical infrastructure and services i.e. waste collection, water distribution, traffic management with digital technology and communication systems. Smart cities are community-centric and look to engage community in open innovation, e-participation and e-governance.

Why is it important for Council to invest in this strategy?

By creating Redlands Coast Smart and Connected City Strategy we can identify how our city can best leverage emerging technology to help Redlands Coast be more efficient, sustainable and advance the way we deliver services and do business in the future. By embracing digital technology, Redlands Coast will be able to adapt, innovate and improve how we respond to future changes and challenges in our environment.

How does this strategy relate to the islands?

The development of our Redlands Coast Smart and Connected City Strategy can explore innovative solutions to help address the mainland and our islands' infrastructure needs. This strategy will enable Council to consider how to make efficient use of physical infrastructure (roads, built environment and other physical assets) by leveraging emerging technology. For example, smart street lighting to reduce power consumption and an intelligent waste collection system to better understand waste servicing needs in real time.
