    Why is the Cemetery Upgrade being done?

    • To ensure the continued safety of people visiting and interacting within the cemetery
    • To ensure the community can continue to safely reflect and honour their loved ones within the cemetery
    • To provide resolution to stakeholders with family and friends memorialised in the ‘Randall Walls and Gardens
    • To preserve the cemetery for future generations
    • To improve access to the cemetery

    What does the project involve?

    • Lychgate entry structure and columbarium walls (location A)
    • Randall Walls and Garden (location  B)
    • Shelter (location C)
    • Formalised entry pathways

    Which areas will be affected by the upgrade?

    A large majority of the work will take place on the ‘Clarke Street’side of the cemetery, and throughout the centre of the cemetery
    leading up to the colombarium brick walls in the centre of the cemetery. Work will also take place on the pathways throughout the cemetery.

    Will visitation to graves or monuments be affected by the upgrade?

    It is anticipated that there will be no disruption to people visiting graves and monuments in the cemetery.  If upon attending the cemetery you require assistance due to the construction area, please contact Redland City Council Cemeteries and Interment Services.

    Will access to the cemetery be prohibited?

    Access to the cemetery will not be prohibited, however the internal roadways will be closed to allow for construction to take place safely.   Parking will be limited to the bitumen area as you enter the cemetery from Russell Street and the parking area is highlighted with a green and white ‘Parking’ sign.

    Will funeral and interment services take place during the upgrade?

    Yes, there will be no changes to funeral and interment services during the construction period.  All construction work will cease fifteen minutes prior to the commencement of funeral proceedings, and recommence at an appropriate time after the funeral service has concluded.

    Getting safe directions when visiting the cemetery?

    Fenced areas of the cemetery will change as the construction work progresses.  These areas are fenced for public safety.

    Cemetery visitors are encouraged to contact the onsite contractors who are happy to assist and help provide visitor directions.

    Why do personal items or tributes need to be removed?

    This will ensure that such items do not detract from the beauty of the cemetery. Redland City Council’s general terms and regulations, do not permit personal items or tributes on allotments in the cemetery. However, Council appreciates that these items have meaning to families and is asking that they be removed voluntarily to your care before the work begins to preserve and enhance the cemetery so current and future generations can reflect, honour and celebrate their loved ones.  

    What is a Lychgate?

    The term Lychgate (Lych Gate  or Lych-gate) is a term derived from the Old English word for corpse (lych) and was typically the covered entrance to a church yard or burial ground. It provided shelter for the burial party and for the priest to receive the corpse.

    What is a columbarium wall?

    A columbarium wall is a structure for storing cremated remains.
