Will there be lighting as part of the Headland Park upgrade?

    Though lighting is not proposed in this park upgrade, lighting may be considered in future planning if there is a safety or functional requirement to assist pedestrian movement and / or use of visitor facilities (e.g. picnic shelter).

    Will there be authorised vehicle access into Headland Park?

    Yes, vehicle access will be provided for park maintenance and management, occasional Bushcare nursery requirements, and community events.

    Is any vegetation removal proposed?

     Trees and vegetation will be retained and protected in the first instance. Additional planting of vegetation to occur to support the proposed play space.Some minor vegetation removal may occur immediately adjoining the car parking area.

    Is the current area of the gravel / unformed car park being expanded?

    No, the car park is planned to be resurfaced in the current existing footprint. Formalising parking should help optimise the number of spaces available.

    Will there be a reduction of grassed area due to the car park formalisation?

    No, as the car park area is currently a gravel surface. Turf is not able to be maintained in this area due to its use for car parking.

    Why is Headland Park getting an upgrade?

    The park upgrade will involve the renewal and relocation of ageing playground equipment and cater for population growth. The improvements will also seek to manage increased maintenance costs and environmental impacts.

    What are the main improvements?

    The play experience will be moved from near the bus stop, further eastwards into Headland Park and expanded to improve functionality and access. Due to existing issues of maintenance and erosion, the carpark will be formalised with concrete. This will improve durability, functionality and environmental outcomes. Additional facilities will include a picnic shelter, pathway and seating.

    Is Council doing anything to improve the car parking area?


    The existing unsealed carpark area is being upgraded to stencilled, coloured concrete. The upgrade will reduce ongoing maintenance and environmental issues relating to material being washed into the reserve during heavy rain, or being blown about in windy conditions. The carpark will remain approximately the same size.


    What consultation has been undertaken for the park upgrade?

    Consultation on Headland Park has occurred at various times in the past ten years and included the development of a park master plan and concept plan. Feedback from previous consultations has supported the development of play and formalised car parking in Headland Park.

    Are we getting more public amenities in this area?

    An increase in the capacity of public amenities at Headland Park is being investigated for future planning and budget preparations.

    Have you considered the heritage value of the park and surrounding area when undertaking the design?

    Existing heritage and conservation values and requirements have been considered as part of the layout and design. These values will be conserved and managed throughout the project delivery process. All applicable heritage planning and approval requirements will be followed.

    What are you doing with the stormwater runoff from the upper section of the park and carpark areas?

    Surface stormwater will be managed by utilising Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) principles to improve overland flow and water quality.

    Why is the playground being moved to a new location in the park?

    The existing play equipment adjacent to the bus stop requires removal due to age and poor condition. Replacement and upgrade of the play space in the new location improves its connection to existing facilities and open space areas.

    What materials will be used?

    Material selections have considered a number of factors such as sensitivity to the natural setting, design life, equitable access, ongoing operational considerations and maintenance costs. Park upgrade materials may include soft fall rubber, coloured concrete, timber look metal, powder coated and painted finishes and sandstone.

    How does the new play space cater to user abilities and age groups?

    The new play space will cater for a range of user abilities and ages including feature areas suitable for toddlers to mid primary age children.

    Will any works be done near the cotton trees?


    All proposed works are planned within the existing open area of the park. The protection of existing trees will be an important consideration during the construction process.


    How did the theme of the play space upgrade come about?

    Previous consultation identified marine and natural landscape values as desirable. The play space aims to draw on some of the unique qualities of the headlands of Point Lookout to inspire, educate and encourage creative play exploration of this important location.
