What will the work include?

School of Arts Rd and Collins St will be upgraded from the roundabout at the intersection of Denham Boulevard, Queen St and School of Arts Rd through to the roundabout at the intersection of Lochie Dr, Penzance Dr and Collins St. Works will include widening the road, kerb and channel  installation, drainage upgrades, installation of centre islands, provision of bike lanes, realignment of the intersection of School of Arts Rd and Collins St to remove the 90 degree bend and construction of concrete pathways.

How many lanes are being built?

The road will maintain the current two lane carriageway and provide on road cyclist facilities and parking.

What is the surface of the road going to be?

The final surface of the road will be asphalt. This will provide a smother, quieter and longer lasting surface that will reduce ongoing maintenance costs.

    Will there be road lighting?

The new road will be lit to the current Australian road lighting standards.

Is the drainage on School of Arts Rd going to be upgraded?

New drainage culverts will be installed under School of Arts Rd and the road level lifted to alleviate flooding issues.

Are there going to be crossing points?

Two crossing points will be constructed on School of Arts Rd between Habitat Dr and Fielding Rd. These will allow safe access to the two upgraded bus stops and connect into existing pathway systems.  Another crossing point will be constructed on Collins St just south of the pedestrian pathway exit from Karinya Court.

Will the road be closed during construction?

(A lot of construction can be done without affecting the current road layout). It is not intended to close the road but there will be times when traffic travelling through the project will have to do so under a contraflow arrangement but we are hoping to keep this to a minimum. As is usual practice road barriers will be in place and speed through the work site will be reduced to 40km/h.  Safety of road users and those building the road is the highest priority of Council, so at times there may be  minor delays and we asked for your patience at these times.

Why will the works take so long?

Works are expected to be completed by the end of June 2020 (weather permitting). One of the main parts of these works involves the relocation and upgrading of existing underground services and this will need to be completed before any major construction can take place. Constructing the road while still allowing vehicles to travel through the work site will also slow progress but closing the road to all traffic for an extended period of time would cause too great a burden to local residents.

What will be the hours of work?

The work will generally be carried out during daylight hours from  6am to 6pm and  7am  to  4 pm Saturday(as required)with traffic management speed and roadwork speed restrictions in place. No work will be undertaken on Sundays, Public holidays or at night unless by exception, such as need to undertake essential or emergency repair work.

How will the road intersection realignment at Collins and School of Arts affect access?

On completion access from School of Art Road (eastern end ) will also be realigned with a new exit into School of Arts.  Temporary diversions may be required  during construction.

What alternative access routes are available during construction?

Exit from Serpentine Creek Road into Redland Bay Road.
