Detailed designs for Stage 1 of the Minjerribah Panorama Coastal Walk (formerly referred to as the Snapper Street Pedestrian Link) have now been completed and Council anticipates construction works will commence early 2021, subject to procurement and weather conditions (see images in the Drawings section of this page).
This stage, which was identified in the Point Lookout Coastal Walk consultation and report as the important starting point for filling in the ‘missing link’ between Point Lookout Village and Cylinder Beach, will allow locals and visitors to enjoy a scenic and safe walk between Snapper Street and Frenchmans Stairs.
These designs consider community input, maintenance requirements, safety and visual impacts – and will provide an environmentally responsive outcome that preserves the character of Point Lookout.
Community input has been reflected in the designs, which include:
- Removal of bollards at Snapper Street Pedestrian Link – vehicle management will occur through a custom extra high barrier kerb and planting.
- Improved entry and access to Frenchmans Stairs.
- Removal of weeds and species inconsistent with the area’s local ecosystem and, where appropriate, planting of local species.
- Use of natural materials and design principles to ensure anything built is visually ‘quiet’.
- Provision of places to sit along the walk.
- Installation of a viewing platform at the surf/weather checkpoint.
- A route that follows the existing informal trail where possible to minimise impacts on vegetation etc.
- Minimal modification to existing track surfaces.
- Use of permeable track surfaces where existing track surfaces will not work.
- Use of composite materials where raised paths and handrails are required.
- Use of natural rock for easy maintenance and alignment with landscape character where terracing is required.
- Use of plants as edging where possible.
- Capture and celebration of key views along the trail.
- Celebration of the cultural connection to Point Lookout headland.
- Formalised parking at Frenchmans Stairs trail head.
- Retention of access to private residences.
Council has received $1 million from the State Government under the Unite and Recover Community Stimulus Package and will also contribute a further $500,000 to construct Stage 1 of this project.
