2024 Update April - October
Following the commencement of the new SEQ Regional Plan (ShapingSEQ 2023) in December 2023, the area referred to as Southern Thornlands was incorporated into the Urban Footprint and designated as a SEQ Development Area (i.e. it is no longer a 'Potential Future Growth Area').
Council anticipates that the Minister for Economic Development Queensland (MEDQ) may soon declare the area a Priority Development Area (PDA) under the Economic Development Act 2012.
The Queensland State Government has separately released the final Redlands Housing Strategy(External link). The strategy canvasses city-wide housing and is now available on the state government website, including the round 1 and 2 consultation reports. See: Redland Housing Strategy | Planning(External link).
Initial examination indicates that the final report addresses several matters raised in the Council's submission on the draft strategy. Over the coming months, Council expects to consider the final strategy's contents and implications and any further actions it may take in response.
On the 4 April, 2025, the Queensland Government formally Gazetted the 900 hectare area of the Southern Thornlands as a Priority Development Area.
Future development of the area for up to 8,000 homes and 20,000 new residents will now be managed by Economic Development Queensland, (EDQ).
