The Cleveland Aquatic Centre underwent a substantial $1.3 million refurbishment and upgrade in 2019-2020 with the support of the Council and the State Government's COVID Works for Queensland funding.

The works included the refurbishment of pools, concourses, play and kiosk areas, shade facilities, new pool filters, major electrical upgrades and a new 100KW solar system.

A further, $416,000 in capital expenditure and planned facility refurbishments and renewal works in October - November 2023 includes new epoxy floor coatings, repainting of walls and installing new cubicles, wall panelling and refurbished toilet fixtures.

The latest update on our all-important 50-metre pool filters is that they are now on the last leg of their journey to Brisbane.

After further delays, the vessel carrying the filters departed Malaysia’s Port Klang on 7 December.

If all goes well, the filters are now expected to arrive in Brisbane on 23 December.

The filters will then need to go through Australian custom clearance before being available for installation at the Aquatic Centre.

A team of contractors remain on stand-by and committed to installing the new filters as soon as they clear customs and arrive on-site.

It is now expected that the filters could be installed and the pool operational by the middle of January.

The combination of the global Covid-19 pandemic, industrial action, weather and increased capacity issues in ports, is having a major impact on sea freight schedules around the world.

Globally, most companies are experiencing between six weeks and longer lead times than standard.

The pool filters are a critical piece of equipment. They were procured from overseas only after no submission was received for supply of a suitable local Australian manufactured product.

A large amount of upgrade and improvement work has been completed at the centre.

Once this crucial final element is complete, the community will have access to a quality and enjoyable aquatic centre for many years to come.

The good news is that our new 50-metre pool filters are on their way and are now expected to land in Brisbane port on 3 December.

For swimmers, pool contractors, Redland City Council and the Centre Operator, it has been a long and frustrating wait.

After a series of delays from major COVID -19 impacts on global shipping schedules and then by weather on route, the filters are now expected to arrive in Malaysia’s Port Klang in the next few days, before embarking on their final leg to Brisbane.

A team of contractors are on stand-by and committed to installing the new filters as soon as they clear customs and arrive on-site, allowing the 50 pool to be operational again before Christmas.

Centre users will see other work continuing on final landscaping, tiling and concourse painting. At the same time, every effort is being made to complete this last major 50-metre pool upgrade as early as possible.
