At 10 signatures, this petition will be considered properly made.
Petition Request:
Investigate opportunities to develop three connected tourist walking trails in Cleveland:
(1) from the Cleveland Station and Redlands Coast Visitor Information Centre to the Old Schoolhouse Gallery (the Rail Trail),
(2) from the Grand View Hotel to Cleveland Point,
(3) a Wetlands Discovery Trail linking the Grand View Hotel to Oyster Point Park - with each trail to have attractive signage along its route providing information about matters of historical, scenic and ecotourism interest.
Petition Outcome:
This petition was presented by Cr Peter Mitchell at the General Meeting held on 19 March 2025. The matter was defined as operational in nature and referred to the Chief Executive Officer for consideration.
Council investigated the petition request and provided a response to the Principal Petitioner on 12 June 2025 as follows:
With respect to the creation of the three trails you reference, it is noted that footpaths facilitating pedestrian activity already exist in these locations. There is also a range of existing signage related to heritage and environmental matters present in some locations along these pathways.
There is a general appreciation that enhancements to the pedestrian experience through access to heritage and environment information on the trails may have some benefit for tourism.
At present, Council continues to consider priority outcomes when considering how public areas in the city can be enhanced. Council has no current plan to upgrade the tourism potential of these trails, but could consider this in the future depending on several factors, including final decisions on the Toondah Harbour Priority Development Area and budget priorities.
Council has an evolving pipeline of tourism opportunities to consider and prioritise across the city and appreciates the possibilities for the trails you have highlighted. Council is also considering potential innovation in how trails may be activated using technology.
