PAPER PETITION - Request to Resolve Drainage Issues at Wynyard Street Park Cleveland
Principal Petitioner: Tracie Saverin
Date of Receipt: 23 February 2026
Number of Signatures: 34
Petition Request:
Resolve the drainage/water issues in Wynyard Street Park. Slimy, mostly stagnant water encourages mozzies, midges, toads and other vermin. At times it can be very smelly. It is a concern and an eyesore for local residents and passers by. Has been a problem for 4 plus years. Let's make it an aesthetically pleasing and wildlife friendly park and walkway for all to enjoy.
Petition Response (15 April 2026):
As presented to Council at the General Meeting of 18 March 2026 – Item 7.2 – the motion was carried, with the following resolution issued by Council resolving “that this petition is of an operational nature and be received and referred to the Chief Executive Officer for consideration”.
The Chief Executive Officer has referred this matter to the City Assets Group for review, investigation and response.
As the principal petitioner, we wish to advise that Council has now completed a detailed engineering assessment of the issue and are pleased to provide the following update.
Council officers can confirm that the existing Telstra telecommunications pit on Wynyard Street has been frequently filling with water and overflowing, causing localised flooding across the verge and near adjoining properties. The pit was observed to retain water even during dry conditions. As the pit currently has no dedicated drainage outlet, excess water spills onto the surrounding areas, resulting in the nuisance flooding reported by residents.
To address this issue, Council has developed a practical and effective drainage relief option that provides a permanent outlet for both seepage water and stormwater entering the pit by installing a new drainage connection to the existing stormwater system.
Council intends to progress this project as a priority in response to the issues currently being experienced by residents, with the aim of completing the works within approximately six months of this correspondence. While a confirmed delivery timeframe cannot yet be provided, this update is intended to outline the current status and planned direction of the works.
In the meantime, should you have any further questions or wish to discuss this matter in more detail, please do not hesitate to contact Council.
As the principal petitioner, you may wish to share the outcome of this petition with the other petitioners.
