Petition Request:

I write to raise concerns regarding the deteriorating state of High Central Rd/Kate St. Classified as a regional area, when comparing other regional main road conditions of similar populations, the disparity in road maintenance and investment is stark. The current state of the road is attributed to several long-standing issues; 1. Lack of kerbing 2. Absence of culverts 3. Inadequate drainage resulting, in a road no longer fit for purpose, particularly given the island’s growing population.

Recent rainfall has further degraded its condition. The Council’s response—filling potholes—has proven to be temporary and ineffective, as these fixes wash away with the next rains. Of particular concern, the intersection of Kate and Kooberry Streets; the bitumen completely eroded, Council's short-term solution to entirely remove the surface, replace with dirt, consequently deteriorating into a greater hazard. Vehicles now slowing to less than 10 km/h to pass safely. Additionally, the placement of bus stops poses significant safety risks. Many located at the crest of hills, base of inclines, or road curves—locations that not only inhibit motorists from safely overtaking but also endanger children boarding and alighting from buses.

We respectfully request the following action plan, with a completion timeline of no greater than 12 months:

• Install culverts in necessary locations

• Construction of kerbing

• Widening to accommodate increasing traffic volumes

• A full re-surface of the road

• Relocation of bus stops.

We urge the responsible authorities to prioritise this matter to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all road users on Macleay Island.
