Request for Infrastructure Updates to Sunshine Drive, Cleveland - PAPER PETITION 60 signatures

Principal Petitioner: Tom Daley

Closing Date: 4.30pm, 19 June 2024

At 10 signatures, this petition will be considered properly made.

Petition Request:

The Redlands should have bus lanes, trams, better bike lanes.  Sunshine Drive should have footpaths and better streetlights so people can go for walks at night.  Upgrade the Sunshine Drive road.

Petition Response:

The Redlands Coast Transport Strategy 2020 sets out Council’s transport related priorities. These include advocating to other government organisation such as the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR). Advocacy priorities include duplication of the Cleveland Rail Line, Extension of the Eastern Busway, provision of high frequency public transport and transport to the Redlands Coast Islands. As Council’s partner in the provision of public transport infrastructure, the DTMR is committed to creating an integrated network that is accessible to all road users. They are providing a safer, more reliable and more accessible public transport corridor for bus services as part of their commitment to public transport. Bus lanes allow the bus travel time to be reduced during peak periods, thereby encouraging more people to use public transportation during these times. Triggers for the consideration for creating corridors for trams/light rail, or dedicated bus lanes is a decision carried out by Council and DTMR. This is governed by projected demand and traffic volumes which we have not yet reached in this area. As the region develops however, Council and DTMR will continue to monitor demand and plan accordingly for future transport needs.

Lighting

Most streetlights on road reserves are owned by Energex and are the responsibility of Energex to maintain. Energex are undertaking an ongoing program of lighting replacement to improve the performance and efficiency of street lighting by replacing old lighting with new and more energy efficient light emitting diodes (LEDs).  Sometimes Council chooses to have additional street lighting installed and these lights then become an Energex asset to maintain. Locations of streetlights that are installed by Council are determined as part of a technical investigation and an assessment of community demand in that location.

Road Upgrades

Council will renew or upgrade roads for a number of reasons. This can be because the asset has reached the end of its useful life and is no longer performing as desired. It can also be because the asset is no longer suitable to meet the needs of a growing area. Finally, Council may upgrade an asset if there is a safety concern identified.

Your petition requests upgrades to Sunshine Drive and roads on Coochiemudlo Island and as these roads do not meet the criterion for upgrades as stated above, we would like to inform you that there are no short to medium term plans for road upgrades at either of these locations.

If there is a particular area of road that you believe requires renewal or upgrade, we encourage you to contact Council’s Customer Service at www.redland.qld.gov.au/contact and provide details about the specific road and your concerns so that Council officers can investigate further.

We hope this has provided you with some useful information about how infrastructure decisions are made.

Please note that this response has been sent to you as the head petitioner, and it is your discretion to notify other persons listed on the petition of the outcome.

We understand this may not be the outcome you were hoping for, however this is Councils considered position following a though investigation of the matter. We have now concluded our review and consider the matter closed.
