This petition calls on RCC to introduce speed bumps on Sylvie Street, Thornlands. Due to concern on hooning, speeding and e-bike, bike and scooter road safety in a move to enhance road safety for both local residents and commuters.

Thank you for your petition requesting the installation of speed bumps on Sylvie Street, Thornlands. The petition was tabled by Councillor Mitchell at the General Meeting held on 20 May 2026 and referred to Council officers for review and response.
Council has carefully considered the request and the concerns raised by residents, and I am writing to provide you a response, as the Principal Petitioner.
Council recognises that vehicle speeds and instances of hooning can be frustrating and concerning for residents, particularly in local residential streets. We appreciate that these issues can impact how safe and comfortable people feel in their neighbourhood.
Following investigation, traffic data collected in December 2020 indicated an average of 771 vehicles per day on Sylvie Street, with an average speed of 47 km/h. This is within the expected range for a local residential street. These roads are typically designed to accommodate significantly higher traffic volumes, and Sylvie Street currently operates well within its intended capacity.
In considering traffic calming measures such as speed bumps, Council carefully weighs both the potential benefits and any broader impacts on the community. While these treatments can be effective in some locations, they do not always address behaviours such as speeding or hooning in a lasting way. In some cases, they can also have unintended impacts for residents, including increased noise from vehicles slowing and accelerating, reduced on-street parking, changes to traffic patterns in nearby streets, and potential delays for emergency services.
Based on the available traffic data and engineering assessment, the conditions on Sylvie Street do not currently indicate a broader or ongoing speeding concern. While Council understands that instances of speeding can still occur and may be concerning for residents, the installation of speed bumps is not considered the most appropriate solution at this time.
Council recognises that, while traffic conditions on Sylvie Street are generally within expected levels, residents may still experience occasional instances of speeding or hooning. These behaviours are understandably concerning and can impact how safe people feel in their neighbourhood.
As these matters fall within the responsibility of the Queensland Police Service, residents are encouraged to report incidents directly so they can be appropriately investigated. Reports can be made via the Hoon Hotline (13 4666) or Policelink (131 444).
When making a report, it can be helpful to provide as much detail as possible, such as the location, direction of travel, date and time, and any supporting information (for example, photos or video). This assists police in assessing and responding to the matter.
In closing, Council acknowledges the concerns raised through the petition and sincerely appreciates the time and effort taken by residents to bring this matter forward. While the installation of speed bumps is not supported at this time, Council will continue to monitor traffic conditions on Sylvie Street as part of its ongoing management of the local road network.
