What kind of works are being proposed along the Queens Esplanade foreshore?

The planned foreshore works at Queens Esplanade aim to protect the shoreline and environmental and social values from coastal hazards, while also providing access to the bay.

    The project includes:

    • Upgrading the seawall with geotextile sandbags
    • Upgrading underground stormwater pipes and building a shallow open stormwater channel
    • Providing natural foreshore access
    • Renourishing sand adjacent to Beth Boyd Park
    • Landscaping

What are the next steps in the project?

In early 2022, the project's detailed design phase was completed.

The project's construction phase remains subject to Council's budget prioritisation process.

Council will continue to keep the community informed as work on the project progresses.

Council consulted the community in 2016 and again in 2020. Will there be any further community consultation on the project?

Council has determined the community’s environmental and social values of the Queens Esplanade foreshore through meetings and by conducting intercept surveys in 2016 and 2020. Feedback submitted by residents and recreational and environmental groups has been incorporated into the design of the concept plan.

Council has also undertaken a series of fundamental studies, including coastal processes, cultural heritage, and ecological studies to help determine the most viable management options to protect the foreshore from coastal hazards while also providing the community with access to the bay.

No further consultation on the project will be undertaken.

Once the project progresses to the detailed design phase, the project’s Your Say page will be updated and the community will be informed.

Further progress on the project remains subject to Council budget prioritisation, Federal and State Government approvals, and State agency input.

Is Council considering to include a foreshore access ramp as part of the project?

Council is investigating opportunities for foreshore access infrastructure along Queens Esplanade as part of Council’s Foreshore Access Policy. This process includes the investigation of Federal and State Government approvals.

An update on this will be announced once more information is made available.

When is construction scheduled to commence?

Council is unable to provide a construction timeframe at this time, but will continue to keep the community informed as work on the project progresses.

Further progress on the project remains subject to Council's budget prioritisation process.
