Regulating the number of dogs that may be kept on residential properties

Consultation has concluded

Council is proposing changes to animal management local laws that cover the number of dogs that may be kept on residential properties.

The proposed local law amendment would allow up to four dogs depending on property size, or if any special circumstances existed, such as fostering, keeping of show or agility dogs or if a Council permit had been granted.

The proposed changes recognise that people keep dogs for a variety of reasons, and would bring Council in line with pet regulations in neighbouring local government areas.

Current laws allow two dogs per property, or three with a permit. Note, all dogs must be registered regardless of the number permitted on a property.
