On 4 April 2025, the Queensland Government formally gazetted the 900-hectare Southern Thornlands area as a Priority Development Area.

Economic Development Queensland (EDQ) will now manage the area's future development, which could include up to 8,000 homes and 20,000 new residents.

Council’s former land use proposal for Southern Thornlands Potential Future Growth Area (STPFGA) has been withdrawn from state interest review.

This webpage was established to inform the community about Council’s preferred future land use intents for the Southern Thornlands Potential Future Growth Area (STPFGA).

Under the South East Queensland Regional Plan (ShapingSEQ), Council was required to investigate this area to determine its appropriate use, including its potential as a future employment area.

In pursuit of this commitment, Redland City Council undertook a series of area studies and community engagements outlined in the project updates below, including a State Interest Review submission to the State Government. During this period, these pages received 13,300 visitors, including 7,100 visitors who visited several site pages.

    Council has completed its investigation of the Southern Thornlands Potential Future Growth Area (STPFGA).

    The investigation involved numerous studies, including the work of independent consultants.

    Future needs, and the unique values and constraints of each area were considered in identifying six proposed land uses.
