Nature play garden gets the green light
On 17 November 2021 Council resolved to approve a lease to Stradbroke Early Learning Centre for the creation of a nature play and garden space at the eastern end of Junner Street South Park.
Council’s approval was informed by community engagement on the proposal and feedback from 88 residents, neighbours and other community members.
Community support was overwhelming, with more than 90% of those who provided a submission expressing their support.
Supporters cited the unique learning opportunities that nature play and gardening provide children, as well as benefits for the broader community.

On 17 November 2021 Council resolved to approve a lease to Stradbroke Early Learning Centre for the creation of a nature play and garden space at the eastern end of Junner Street South Park.
Council’s approval was informed by community engagement on the proposal and feedback from 88 residents, neighbours and other community members.
Community support was overwhelming, with more than 90% of those who provided a submission expressing their support.
Supporters cited the unique learning opportunities that nature play and gardening provide children, as well as benefits for the broader community.
The nature play and garden space will take up approximately 7.5 % of the park, with the balance remaining untouched and accessible to neighbours and others via Bayly and Junner streets.
Planting around the perimeter of the nature play space and garden will act as a green buffer and provide visual and physical separation between the play space and the park and neighbouring properties, minimising any potential impacts on park users or neighbours.
The next steps involve the development of a detailed project plan for the site by Stradbroke Early Learning Centre and final approval by Council.
Community consultation held in August-September 2020
Community consultation was undertaken in 2020 on a nature play and cultural community garden proposed on land next to Stradbroke Early Learning Centre at Dunwich, North Stradbroke Island. The proposal has been put forward by the Stradbroke Early Learning Centre and developed in consultation with Redland City Council.
Council invited neighbours, users of the adjacent park, and anyone interested, to provide their feedback from Saturday, August 8, 2020, to Friday 18, September 2020.
