Did you know there are at least 48 known weed species on Coochiemudlo Island, including some that pose a significant environmental and management challenge?

We're asking residents and property owners of Coochiemudlo Island to help us review weed issues and contribute ideas towards a sustainable Weed Management Plan.

Along with a 2017 survey inviting islanders to submit their ideas on island values, weed impacts and weed management , Council has commissioned an independent consultant and weed expert to look at the issues, surveying island weed issues, and share ideas on weed management practice and options through engagement with residents on the island at a community workshop held on 10 June 2017.

The workshop, attended by over 50 island residents, included a presentation on weed management and discussion of island weed issues.

Following feedback and expert research, work has now begun on the development of a draft weed management strategy for the island that will help ensure island values are respected and improved and maintained for future generations.

  • Share I have read the weed management plan and it seems like the advice received is to use pesticides as the primary form of weed killer, some of these products are being banned around the world and it is only a matter of time until the same happens here. Redlands Council has a reputation for being a Green oriented council yet there is no investigation of using non pesticide means to remove weeds, using steam is one of these alternates now used by councils around the world and locally as well. Can you explain why council is not exploring non-pesticide options for weed control? Coochie could be used as a test case for Redlands Council to trial non-pesticide weed eradication which would also benefit other councils on how to manage weeds and still keep the community and visitors safe. on Facebook Share I have read the weed management plan and it seems like the advice received is to use pesticides as the primary form of weed killer, some of these products are being banned around the world and it is only a matter of time until the same happens here. Hi Kurt,

Thanks for your question. The option of saturated steam weeding was extensively discussed with community advocates for this method throughout the community  engagement process and was considered in the drafting of this report. Its efficacy and potential as a tool in weed treatment is specifically referenced in pages 6 and 48 of the management plan report which has been broadly commended as comprehensive and well researched document.

    Kind regards, Emma.
