William Taylor Memorial Sports Field upgrade project
Skatepark and BMX update
Community consultation workshops on the concept designs for the new district-level skatepark and a new and upgraded BMX track were held in November 2025. Workshop attendees were able to draw or write on the proposed design to offer their opinions and invited into round-table discussions to help further shape the design.
Feedback from the consultation confirmed that the proposed new facilities at the sports field will be positively received and well utilised.
Community members provided numerous suggestions for adjusting specific features of the skatepark to improve functionality. A clear start point was also provided by the community for the BMX track to incorporate different line options to cater for a range of skill levels. In addition, replacing the existing dirt track for the BMX with asphalt for durability was supported.
FINAL CONCEPT DESIGN for the skatepark and BMX can be found on this page under the site plans.

Project background
Council has commenced upgrading the William Taylor Memorial Sports Field at Thorneside.
In June 2021, the four tennis courts were re-opened after being renewed with a premium sports surface, new lighting, fencing, gates, nets and net posts. The existing tennis court shelters also received new lighting and had their roofs repaired while the two public cricket nets were renewed and relocated.
In 2022, we asked the community to let us know their thoughts on a site layout. Feedback from that consultation informed the delivery of Stage 1 of the project, which included the installation of new light poles and LED lighting on the main football field. The consultation has also helped shape a precinct-wide master plan that was endorsed by Council at its General Meeting on 15 October 2025. This endorsement sets a new benchmark as it’s the first time Council has undertaken precinct-level master planning for an existing sporting facility.
The next stage of the project (Stage 2) involves the construction of a new district-level skatepark, BMX track, pétanque arena, multi-court and rebound activity wall. It also includes a possible dog off-leash area as well as upgrades to the public amenities and upgrading and extending the existing carpark through to the Frank Street end. Enhancements to pedestrian connectivity across the precinct is also included in the upgrade as well as new carpark lighting and drainage to improve the stormwater flow from the sports fields and around the clubhouse.
This stage is fully funded, in part by funding through the Australian and Queensland Governments under the South East Queensland Liveability program that supports projects creating sustainable and healthy communities, with the balance funded by Council and works required to be completed by June 2027.
Community consultation to help inform the detailed design of the new skatepark and BMX track as part of the broader Recreation Zone in the Master Plan took place in November 2025.
Future stages 3 and 4 of the William Taylor Master Plan are in planning, and will focus on upgrades to sporting club facilities, playing fields, and the clubhouse. These stages will be delivered progressively, subject to Council budget priorities and external funding opportunities.
The staged approach of the Master Plan ensures it is community-driven through ongoing engagement to reflect the needs and aspirations of local sporting clubs, recreational users and the Redlands Coast community.
